Chair Henry welcomes Ontario government’s commitment to broadband

Whitby, Ontario Wednesday, November 04, 2020

The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

“Broadband access is a vital piece of modern infrastructure that is essential for communication, entertainment, and the economic competitiveness of our residents, businesses and institutions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of broadband access has been amplified even more.

We have continued to advocate the provincial and federal governments for investment in this vital piece of modern infrastructure—throughout the years in many ways—such as at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conferences. We understand the importance of connecting our region with fast and reliable broadband.

That’s why I am welcoming the Ontario government’s announcement today, committing to a historic investment of nearly $1 billion over six years to improve and expand broadband and cellular access across the province.

Durham Region looks forward to seeing a piece of this investment in our broadband initiatives, that will help us better prepare for a digital future and reach our goal of a more connected region.

It’s investments and partnerships such as this, that ensure Durham Region will continue to be the best place to live, work, grow and invest.”
